Skoglund Family Toy Drive:

History: Seven days before Christmas in 2006, we were informed that the promised toy delivery for the children we serve would not be coming!!! As you can imagine, our first reaction to this unexpected turn of events went something like this: Why US? What are WE going to do? How could THEY do this to US?

After a moment entertaining these thoughts, our perspective began to rapidly change ..... We began to realize that this was not even for a second about US or Them! It was always about the little ones who unknowingly depended solely on us to make their Christmas morning bright and full of joy! This realization filled us with a unwavering commitment to help and to not give up on or disappoint our children...but what could we do with few monetary resources and only a few days before Christmas?

We followed our hearts and turned once again to the community for support and guidance and then it happened... a Spark Was Created and the Fire Was Passed and Passed and Passed And Passed...

The spark was one phone call to Barbara Beal Lopez with Brightfarm Productions and one email to everyone in my address book and the rest, as they say, was history. Brightfarm Productions mobilized its supporters and conducted a toy drive on our behalf and then things began to fall into place from every sector imaginable. People began forwarding my email around their offices and to everyone they knew. Last minute toy drives began to pop up as far as Modesto, Fairfield, and El Dorado Hills. The management team of the Folsom Cordova Unified School District reached deep into their wallets and then Passed the Fire, The City of Rancho Cordova reacted with an emergency toy drive and another "opening of wallets", The great folks that attended the Rancho Cordova Chamber of Commerce Meet the Members luncheon did the same. The fire continued to be passed ... SMUD, Vision Services Plan, Cordova Lane Elementary School, The Folsom Police Department, The Folsom Teen Council, Powerhouse Ministries, Sacramento Downtown Rotary, The WOLF 101.9 FM, etc. Our friends at Sacramento and Company and News 10  picked the story up and continued to "Pass the Fire" and then unexpectedly, Maloof Sports and Entertainment [who had been touched by the fire] generously donated 125 new bicycles to our cause.
And then the fire continued to be passed...

All told, more than 3,000 toy donations were received and distributed to the children of Rancho Cordova and Folsom through the "Partnership", The Cordova Community Food Locker, Learning Express and the Sacramento Law Enforcement Chaplaincy.   The community response to this effort was in two words… overwhelming and inspiring!

At the center of these efforts stood Dan Skoglund, Councilmen for the City of Rancho Cordova. Without hesitation Dan called me on the weekend within one hour of receiving my E-mail and asked simply “how can I help?” After a brief discussion, Dan wrote a sizeable check to help us “jumpstart” our efforts, which led to others coming forward with their time, their talents and their treasures in support of our wonderful children. In addition, Dan served as the official “Bike Distribution Monitor” and made each child who received a bicycle from the toy drive take an oath that they would wear a helmet while riding their new bike. Dan’s passion quickly spread to his family who offered to lend their name and support to this year’s effort to provide a magical Christmas morning this year for all of our precious children.

1st Annual Partnership in Thanks:

In its inaugural year, Giving Thanks: A Community Thanksgiving Dinner, will be a true community collaboration, bringing together Rancho Cordova Grocery Outlet, The Sacramento Marriott Rancho Cordova, and the Partnership to serve turkey dinners to local families involved with Partnership programs. The invitation-only dinner will be held Wednesday November 21, at The Sacramento Marriott Rancho Cordova as a way for the Partnership to share the spirit of the holiday with its families.

Heroes Joining Hands:

Heroes Joining Hands is the Partnership’s annual Community Supportor Recognition Event. This evening event invites community members to gather in acknowledgement of outstanding support of the Partnership and of local children and families.

Fourth of July Kids Zone:

July 2007 marked the inaugural year that the Partnership hosted the Kids Zone at the Rancho Cordova 4th of July Celebration, “America the Beautiful.” The event was a smash success, and our staff and volunteers had lots of fun in the sun over the 3-day celebration. Highlights of the Kids Zone included Free Pony Rides, Arts and Crafts, Face Painting and Bubble Pond. Hourly kid-friendly and developmentally appropriate games were played by trained Partnership Resource Center Staff, including the ever-popular “cup cake walk” and water-balloon toss. Good (and slightly messy) times were had by all, and we look forward to lending a helping hand (and paintbrush) to the event in 2008!

Color Me Healthy: October Health and Volunteer Fair:

An autumn tradition, this year’s Partnership Health Fair is scheduled for October 27th and is going to be bigger and better than ever. The health component of the Fair focuses on encouraging individuals to assume responsibility for their own health by offering valuable health information, screening services, and education services to culturally diverse communities. In addition, the fair will serve as a Volunteer Expo, showcasing organizations in the Rancho Cordova community who have volunteer needs and offering families a chance to help in the effort to build a healthier community. Highlights of the event will include healthy snacks and give-aways, free games for the whole family, and opportunities for the whole family to get involved with service projects!
